Your data

Is Quill & Lantern really free?

Yes. There's no subscription, no ads, and nothing locked behind a paywall. Optional tips on Ko-fi help keep it going, and they only earn thanks.

Where is my data stored?

On your phone. There are no accounts, and we can't see anything you log. That also means we can't recover it if your phone is lost, so keep a backup. See the privacy policy for details.

How do I back up my data or move to a new phone?

On Android, open Settings › Strongbox (Backup) and turn on Cloud backup (Daily or Weekly). Backups go to a private folder in your own Google Drive that only the app can open. On a new phone, install Quill & Lantern, tap I've been here before, then Restore from Google Drive.

You can also save a backup file from the Strongbox anywhere you like, such as your files, email, or a cloud drive, and restore from it on the new phone. Files work between iPhone and Android.

How do I delete all my data?

In the app, open Settings, then Strongbox (Backup), and tap Delete all data at the bottom. It offers to save a backup first, then asks you to type DELETE to confirm. Deleting the app does the same. There's no other copy, apart from any backup files you saved; delete those wherever you kept them.

Food

A food or barcode wasn't found. What can I do?

About 33,000 foods are built in, including common US packaged foods and their barcodes. Others are looked up online in USDA FoodData Central and Open Food Facts, a free community database, so some products are missing. Add the food yourself with Create a food, and it's saved for next time.

If Bar the door (Offline mode) is on in Settings, the app doesn't look anything up online, and search says the door is barred.

A food's nutrition looks wrong.

Food databases can contain mistakes, and the app already skips numbers that can't be right. If a food doesn't match its package, open it and tap “Numbers don't match the package? Correct them.” Fix the numbers or scan the label, and your version takes the original's place on your phone, for search, scans, and saved meals.

How accurate are the calories?

They're good estimates, not measurements. Food values come from USDA and Open Food Facts, and workout calories from the Compendium of Physical Activities and your weight. Quill & Lantern is a log, not medical advice; talk with your doctor or a dietitian about your goals.

Recipes

Some ingredients say "Check" or weren't found.

The recipe builder reads each line and marks its guesses, such as a default can size, so you can confirm them. Tap the amount to change it, or tap the food to pick another. When you pick a different food, the app can remember it for that phrase next time.

How do I share a recipe?

Open the recipe in the Kitchen and tap Send by raven. You can send a link, show a QR code for someone nearby to scan, or save a .recipe file. Photos are never shared.

Someone sent me a recipe link. How do I save it?

With the app installed, tapping the link opens the recipe in the app, where you can save it. You can also open the Kitchen, tap Import a recipe, and paste the link, scan its QR code, or open a .recipe file. Without the app, the link opens the recipe on this website so you can still read it.

If it says the link looks incomplete, the messaging app may have cut it short. Ask the sender to share it again, or as a file.

Quests and workouts

My quest reminders don't appear.

Check that Quest reminders is on in Settings and that the quest has a reminder time, then check your phone's notification settings for Quill & Lantern. Some phones pause apps to save battery; letting Quill & Lantern run in the background helps reminders arrive on time.

My workouts aren't showing in Google Fit or Fitbit.

Turn on Send workouts to Health Connect in Settings. Other apps read Health Connect on their own schedule, so a workout can take several minutes to appear there. Each app also needs its own access: in Health Connect › App permissions, make sure that app can read exercise.

Why doesn't a workout show calories?

Workout calories need your weight. Add it in Settings › You; it's used only for this estimate.
